DUE to countless requests, South Africa’s most successful musical revue, A Handful of Keys, will be returning once more this week.

Launched in 1994 as a co-creation between Ian von Memerty and Bryan Schimmel, A Handful of Keys has played to more than 420 000 people in over 1 450 performances over the last 23 years.

The show unravels as a constant surprise with devastating wit and musical mastery.

From piano pyrotechnics to inspiring inventiveness, it is a two-hour fireworks display of excitement, energy and sheer mind-blowing talent.

Audiences can expect to see highlights such as The Complete History of The Broadway Musical in 12 Minutes, Liberace, Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Funeral for A Friend and the SA Medley, as well as new material.

The virtuoso talents are Roelof Colyn, who has been an A Handful of Keys stalwart since 2001, beloved by audiences for his effortless charm, wit and magical playing.

He is joined by James Smith (19), the youngest person to ever appear in A Handful of Keys.

Von Memerty said, “It is a risk putting such a young person into a show as complicated and subtle as this one, but I believe that James, with his unique mix of musicality, quirky humour and the beautiful timbre of his expressive voice, is up to the challenge.”

As the show’s director, Von Memerty, who has expanded and developed the show since 1997, has added a new and dazzling difference.

This time around there will be an extra handful on stage.

A local piano prodigy from each destination will have a chance to feature in the show.

The 2017 rendition of A Handful of Keys will take place from today to Saturday at the PE Opera House.

There will be a performance every day at 7:30pm and another on Saturday at 3pm.

Tickets, ranging from R130 to R145, are available from Computicket.
