THE 50-year-old Caltex Unity Motors, a landmark fuel service station on busy Cape Road in Newton Park, has a new lease on life and an injection of youthful energy thanks to new owners, Ismail Limalia and his daughters, Atiyyah and Thameenah Limalia.

Caltex Unity Motors is ideally situated close to the always-bustling Cape Road/William Moffett intersection, providing easy access for motorists, especially the early morning southbound traffic.

The Limalia family have spent the past 18 months reviving the service station to offer motorists an easily accessible forecourt and a range of value-added services including a small convenience store, car wash and auto valet centre.

There’s even a barber on site for those needing a quick trim on the way to work!

Open 24-hours a day, the forecourt stocks Caltex’s hi-tech lubricants, Techron fuel and diesel – all geared to maximise fuel economy.

The convenience shop trades from 06:00 to 20:00 daily, offering competitive prices and regular specials on a wide variety of products including cooldrinks, cigarettes, chips, sweet treats and general groceries.

It’s no wonder that the Limalia daughters are following in their dad’s footsteps as Ismail comes from a family background in retail – his parents opened one of the first “house shops” in Durban in the 1970s and he started his own business journey at the tender age of seven.

“My family business background has definitely assisted me over the past 20 years in retail as I learnt from early on that it is all about SERVICE.

“Hard work and a passion for delivering the best service runs in our family’s blood,” he said.

Buying Unity Motors 18 months ago brought a 20-year goal to fruition. “My father ran a service station during the early ’90s in Durban, and after spending a lot of time working with him, it became my dream to one day own a site too.”

Along with dad’s experience and passion for customer service, daughters Atiyyah and Thameenah bring their youthful energy and ideas to the team – Atiyyah’s design background is seen in the creative flair of forecourt and shop displays, and attention to detail her strength in admin and customer interaction. Although still at school, Thameenah is already passionate about the family business and spends much of her free time at Unity Motors fine-tuning her business acumen.

The family is supported by a team of well trained and experienced staff, most of whom have been at Unity Motors for at least 10 years and have grown personal relationships with customers.

“We create an environment that encourages productivity, mutual respect and a strong sense of social responsibility. Management and staff work together as a TEAM to offer a hassle-free experience and the best service.

“Our customers must become our lifelong friends and partners in progress,” Ismail said.

Caltex Eastern Cape Marketer chief executive, Clive Berlyn, welcomed the Limalias to the Caltex Eastern Cape family, saying, “It is exciting to see Unity Motors coming back to life with this dynamic family at the helm.

“They have a great combination of passion for service, experience and youthful flair that will no doubt add value to customers and make them feel a part of the Caltex family too.”

Caltex Unity Motors is a level one BBBEE company that employs over 90% of its staff from previously disadvantaged communities.

Firmly believing in giving back to the community, Unity Motors has partnered with Al Fidaa Foundation, an NGO focused on poverty alleviation, and recently donated R7 000 worth of rice to be used in the foundation’s soup kitchens, which feed close to 100 000 people a month.

Unity Motors recently installed a water recycling plant that collects and recycles water to supply the car wash and auto valet.

Future plans include revamping the convenience shop and extending their weekly specials and monthly competitions for loyal customers.
