WINNING the coveted Platinum Cleaver Award, even once, is no small feat for any butchery, but winning it for the sixth time is a testament to the service excellence strived for at Cuyler Butchery in Uitenhage. As one of only two Cleaver Award winners in the Eastern Cape this year, they certainly set the bar very high.Contenders won points for meeting consumer expectations on in-store hygiene, supply of quality assured roller marked South African Beef, level of competency in offering the best advice on meal preparations and perceived value for money. And they cannot enter for the awards, but have to be nominated by clients.“Clients nominate us and then get a certain number of time to vote. We need a certain number of votes to qualify for an audit, which can then take place at any time. This year, we had to score more than 70% to qualify for an award. We reached about 98%,” said the proud owner of Cuyler Butchery, Leon Slabbert. “It’s quite a tough thing to achieve.”Butcheries were judged in three categories: butcheries with three or more till points; butcheries with three or fewer till points; and food market/supermarket butcheries. Cuyler Butchery received a Platinum Cleaver Award for the best butchery in the Eastern Cape in the three or more till points category.Slabbert, who followed in his father’s footsteps in the industry and whose son has also joined the business, said they have won this particular category each time. Cuyler Butchery has been under his watchful eye for 31 years this year and they’ve only grown from strength to strength in that time. In 2015, they moved into the building where they are currently situated, where a biltong deli, a butchery shop, deboning facilities and separate production lines for pork, chicken and beef are just the tip of the iceberg. They are located at 136 Durban Street in Uitenhage.
