LOCALS will have the chance to see the multiple award-winning South African documentary film, STROOP – Journey into the Rhino Horn War, during a screening at The Boardwalk this weekend.

STROOP has taken the film industry by storm, raking in a number of prestigious awards.

After leaving the US with a final win at the Mystic Film Festival for best international documentary, the film started its European premiere season with a bang at the Wildlife Film Festival in Rotterdam, in the Netherlands.

It recently finished its international premiere run with impressive results.

The film also won the coveted Flamingo Award, with the jury stating, “This is an impressive and shocking film. The jury believes the filmmakers, guided by the great main character Bonné de Bod, have managed to show us the immense complexity of the problem of rhino poaching.

“This body of work is a very powerful and emotional call to action.”

In her acceptance speech, producer, presenter and protagonist of STROOP, De Bod, said, “All the awards are really overwhelming, in a wonderful, positive way and that seeing packed movie theatres filled with the citizens of Rotterdam who engage powerfully with STROOP is affirmation once again that our rhinos do matter to the world.”

STROOP – Journey into the Rhino Horn War has won nine awards, namely, the Green Tenacity Award at the San Francisco Green Film Festival, Spirit of Action feature film award at the Santa Cruz Film Festival, best documentary award at the San Pedro International Film Festival, best female filmmaker award at the Glendale International Film Festival, special focus documentary award at the LA Femme International Film Festival, best documentary award at the San Diego International Film Festival, best international documentary award at the Mystic Film Festival, newcomer award at the Wildlife Film Festival Rotterdam, and best documentary award and the courage award for most courageous film at the Berlin Courage Film Festival in Germany.

STROOP has been selected for further film festivals in the US in November but the filmmakers have chosen to return home to premiere the film for South Africa earlier than planned, due to its successful international run.

No local distributor has chosen to run the film in South Africa, leaving the filmmakers with the task of self distributing the film, which they have committed to doing.

STROOP – Journey into the Rhino Horn War will be screened at Nu Metro at The Boardwalk on Saturday, January 19 at 09:00.
