THE story of a bat child found in a cave in 1992 became the inspiration for the award winning Rock ’n Roll cult classic Bat Boy: the Musical about a half-boy, half-bat, dubbed “Bat Boy”, who grew up living in a cave.

PANSA Eastern Cape will present the South African premiere of Bat Boy: the Musical as part of their inaugural Young Performers Project from February 24 to March 5.

Bat Boy: The Musical, by Keythe Farley, Brian Flemming and Laurence O’Keefe, is based in the American mid-west.

Directed by Marelize Barnard with Musical Direction by Richard Campbell and choreography by Candice Johnstone, this musical brings some of PE’s most talented young performers together.

Batboy, played by Reinhardt Malherbe (15), is discovered by teenagers in a cave and taken to the local vet’s home where the vet’s wife and daughter decide to adopt him. He becomes a part of their “good Christian family” until dark secrets from the past and the prejudice that runs deep in their small town spill over into a shocking climax.

The cast includes Reinhardt Malherbe, Jenna Deysel, Arthur Daniels, Sarah Morton, Kasvia von Memerty, Sean Cady, Kai Schoemaker, Sarah Lawson and Kerry-Lee Jeffery – all previously seen in local school and community theatre productions.

“This is my biggest role yet, and I look forward to the challenge,” said Reinhardt, who attends Theodor Herzl High.

Batboy: the Musical opens at the Savoy Theatre in Diaz Road on February 24 and will run nightly at 7.30pm, except on Sunday and Monday, until March 5.

Tickets are R60 each and are available from Computicket outlets and online at www.computicket.com. Contact Rose Cowpar on 072 906 1977 for group bookings and all enquiries. – REPORTER
