LUCK fell on the Nelson Mandela Bay when it hosted the second New Year’s Cup games in what remains the first biggest amateur football event in the Eastern Cape Province.

The games were played at the Walmer Community Fields and Motherwell NU 2 Stadium on Sunday. The New Year’s Cup, which is sponsored by LaLiga, Mercedes Benz and the Eastern Cape Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC), started in Grahamstown during last year’s festive season.

The tournament was launched at JD Dlepu Stadium in Grahamstown on Reconciliation Day. It is the most lucrative football tournament on the Eastern Cape calendar and it is played by 32 teams from across the province.

The teams are divided into eight groups and the tournament starts in a round-robin format before ending up in a knockout stage.

During the tournament, up-and-coming football players have the opportunity to rub shoulders with ex-professional players, such as Patrick Mayo (Kaizer Chiefs) and Mzuvukile Tom (Golden Arrows), as well as current professional players, including Luvuyo Memela (Orlando Pirates) and various Chippa United players.

Defending champions, Maru FC, drubbed All Stars 5-0 in the opening game in Grahamstown.

Fairplay Hunting Tigers FC from Mthatha demolished Mandela Joli Brothers FC from Addo 4-1 at Motherwell NU 2 Stadium. Tigers’ goals came courtesy of Thandolwethu Koba, Vuyolwethu Zungula and Mphumzi Siqhwala with a brace. Ayanda Sifundo came up with Brothers’ consolation goal.
