Bhisho office precinct planned to house more government offices

THE Department of Roads and Public Works has identified the construction of the Bhisho Office Precinct as a sustainable long-term solution in providing office accommodation for various provincial government departments.

The Bhisho Office Precinct will accommodate the Departments of Economic Development and Environment Affairs, Rural Development and Agrarian Reform, Social Development, Transport, Human Settlements, Safety and Liaison, Sport, Recreation, and Arts and Culture.

The construction of the Bhisho Office Precinct will involve activities such as infrastructure development, construction, installation of machinery and equipment, landscaping and varied number of construction related activities.

“It is envisaged that for each R1m spent during construction of the Precinct it is expected to generate an additional R102million in business for downstream companies and service providers, while also creating R450 000 new business in the wider economy,” said Thandiswa Marawu, MEC for the Department of Roads and Public Works.

According to Marawu, it is also envisaged that the development of the Precinct will directly increase the Buffalo City Metro’s GDP by R408 million.

The construction will create 4774 man-year job opportunities. There will be further anticipated long- term job opportunities created during for the maintenance and upkeep work required over the life cycle of the property.

Other planned projects

Other major projects to provide government office accommodation that will be under construction in 2017/18, include:

  • Construction of Mt Frere Social Cluster Phase 2
  • Construction of Mt Fletcher Cluster offices
  • Construction of Aliwal North Cluster offices
  • Ex-Mary Theresa Hospital: Conversion of nurses home into Offices-Alfred Nzo
  • Bensonvale College: Conversion of dormitories to offices-Joe Gqabi
  • Cape College: Upgrade to electrical installation, waterline and sewer line-Amathole
  • Komani Office Park: Extension for DOE –Chris Hani
  • Social Development
  • Construction of Libode Social Cluster
