When The POPS Foundation formally launched as an organisation, our purpose was to serve the poorest of the poor in our communities. In this we have grown with leaps and bounds, from initially being responsible for a few hundred meals per month to more than 60 000 per month at present. As we do not receive any formal grants, all supplies are purchased from funds which we raise ourselves, and with the assistance of the public and a few corporate donors. In this we have been blessed to have the Port Elizabeth Express as a media partner. From the outset, the Express has been an invaluable part of The POPS Foundation. Our journey would not have been as successful, had it not been for their generosity in covering our activities. With each event and campaign that the foundation has launched, the Express has given us many valuable columns of space in their publications, helping us to spread the word near and far that together we can make a significant difference in the lives of the less fortunate. It would be remiss not to mention that we have been truly blessed to have Zeldré Swanepoel (PE Express news editor) as our liaison at the Express. From the very first she has been part of our journey, always approachable and friendly, dedicated and caring. On behalf of the many thousands who we have served, and continue to serve, Happy Birthday, PE Express! Dankie, Thank you, Ndiyabulela for being part of our community and our lives! We love you! Antoinette Esterhuyse, HOD: Merryvale School for Specialised Education: For many years, Merryvale School for Specialised Education has had the privilege of receiving continuous support and loyalty from the PE Express. Through their insight into the world of children with special educational needs, many events at Merry-vale have been covered by their compassionate and caring journalists. Through the lens of various photographers, our activities are regularly conveyed to the broader public, and the community is enlightened regarding the lives of intellectually disabled persons. It also affords our learners the prospect of proudly appearing in the PE Express, the same way their brothers and sisters often do. To be in the limelight, so to speak, is a confidence booster for any child, more so for those who seldom enjoy opportunities often taken for granted by mainstream society.A picture paints a thousand words indeed. Thank you to the PE Express for painting words of optimism, for building courage and for being a bastion of hope in the lives of our learners who have to contend with severe challenging barriers to learning. Congratulations to the PE Express on turning 35 – may the years ahead be filled with the same exuberance and excitement you bring to our community every week! Riesl Spies, General Manager, Aurora Special Care Centre: When I think of PE Express it is always a happy thought. With so many sad stories all around, PE Express celebrates the positive side of life. PE Express celebrates the people who care and support. PE Express celebrates all super stars in all the communities of Port Elizabeth, and therefore all of us can celebrate their prestige. Aurora Special Care Centre celebrates all 35 years with you. We celebrate your contribution towards the Port Elizabeth community and specific towards the so often left out communities like Aurora Special Care. Thank you PE Express; we hope for many more years of celebrations. Happy Birthday! For as long as I can remember, the PE Express has been a part of my life and for the last 10 years I have been privileged to become part of it in return. I am endlessly chuffed that Bettie and the team are able and willing to recognise the love that the Eastern Cape readers have for Formula 1 racing. And I am even more delighted that I am the one who gets to share this majestic sport with all who love it through the PE Express. The PE Express is more than the pages it’s printed on. It’s familiarity and a constant in so many Port Elizabethans lives to the point that you cannot imagine waking up on a Wednesday morning and not having it in your post box.I’d like to offer a word of thanks to the PE Express team as a whole. Almost miraculously they seamlessly produce not only the PE Express but several other publications on a weekly basis without ever compromising on quality and never ceding on what is best for the readers.Hearty congrats on turning 35 and may there be 135 more! Linda Harwood, Harwood Promotions: Congratulations to the PE Express on 35 very successful years keeping us updated with community news, events and services. It is always such a pleasure to work with the super professional and friendly PE Express team! Best wishes. HAPPY 35th birthday, PE Express. May you continue to thrive for many years to come. I have worked behind the scenes as the English proofreader for nearly 10 years and the newspaper gives me a great reason for getting up in the morning. Most of the journalists have been here since I started under the leadership of Bettie Giliomee-Rossouw. They (and those who have joined since my arrival here) are an excellent team – friendly, helpful, caring and efficient. I am proud to be part of this tabloid that brings everyday news to so many readers in our Metro. It’s free and therefore depends so much on our advertisers – so thank you to them as well.Heartiest congratulations, PE Express. You serve a wonderful purpose in this great city of ours.
