A GUTSY performance by Major Chiefs saw them defeat the tough Despatch Pioneers 4-3 after they were behind by one goal during their Safa Nelson Mandela Bay SAB Regional League clash which took place at Zwide Stadium on Saturday.

Chiefs took the game to the visiting team from the word go. A long pass that was delivered by Zuko Mafayi went straight to Simamkele Pefile who unleashed a thunderous shot into the back of the net.

Pioneers replied quickly with a penalty that was taken by Mzoxolo Mabulu. The visitors increased their lead to 2-1 after Mabulu was fouled in the box. Mabulu was declared the hero of the day as he registered the se-cond goal from the penalty mark.

Chiefs were awarded a penalty that Mafayi scored to make the score 2 -2 until the end of the first half.

In the second half, Chiefs looked more threatening on the counter-attack, but their front men wasted many clear-cut chances in front of the goals. Pefile’s solo effort led Olwethu Hanabe to score Chiefs’ third goal.

The hosts’ joy was quickly cancelled after Luvuyo Tshawe Gewu came up with an equaliser. Gewu’s goal seemed to have revitalised Pioneers but Mabulu’s next shot went over the goals.

Pefile was rewarded with a spectacular goal that helped Major Chiefs win the game 4-3.

The game between PE Sundowns and FC Winners did not take place because FC Winners did not have players’ cards.
