LITTLE more than a year ago The Co-op Mica proudly expanded their services to include an ammo department that is fast becoming one of the best in town with a pro at the helm - ammo specialist Johann Buys. With 14 years in the gun trade, he is definitely the man you want when you’re looking for a firearm, whether it’s for self-defence, sport shooting or hunting. And everything you need can now be found in one place, complete with expert advice. From an actual firearm to bullets, barrels, rifle scopes and reloading equipment, The Co-op stocks it all. Buys, a former member of the SAPS and qualified firearms instructor, joined the team about five months ago and has found it to be an exciting challenge. “It was a nice move, coming here. I’m crazy about it. “Being in the market, I know what most of the clients want. “I’ve earned myself a reputation as the guy to go to when you’re looking for something out of the ordinary, because I’ll dig it up for you,” he said.According to Buys, their main focus is on sports shooting, something he understands well, being a dedicated enthusiast himself. Buys does practical pistol shooting, metallic silhouette shooting and clay pigeon shooting in his free time. “What else am I going to do on a Saturday?”Many of their sports shooting enthusiasts gravitate toward shotguns, something Johann said has become quite a highbrow sport recently. “It’s important to me that people in the gun trade do sports shooting. If you are not a hunter and you don’t shoot for sport, how are you going to know what your customers are talking about when they want something specific?”On the other hand, The Co-op’s ammo department also has a lot of customers who are hunters, professional and otherwise. That particular group starts burning up the gun trade from March every year. “We sell a lot of firearms, ammunition, gunpowder and other items that time of year. We also stock a small range of rifle scopes. It’s a small market. We all know each other.”Then comes the smaller, but no less important, group of customers: the ones looking for something to defend themselves. “It’s important that people have access to something to protect themselves. “It’s not safe out there, simple as that,” Johann said. “We do offer alternates to firearms, such as pepper spray, tasers and stun guns. It’s not always necessary to use a firearm, so it’s nice to have an alternative option sometimes.“What this place is really about is offering advice to those who need it. I like having one-on-one contact when talking to a person. It’s easier to get an idea of what that person’s needs really are.” For more info or specialist advice visit The Co-op Mica, located in the Willow Road Shopping Centre on the corner of Circular Drive and Willow Road, or contact them at 041 007 0580.
