CHANNEL Porto FC and Liverpool came out on top of the 42 junior soccer teams that participated in the Motherwell Football Association (MOFA) Sasko Knockout Cup Competition, after the finals were played at Motherwell NU9 B Field on Sunday.

The tournament, which started a month ago, was played in a knockout format by U-13 and U-15 teams.

The U-13 winners were Channel Porto FC, who overcame Showvillage United 4-1 in the finals.

Liverpool had to dig deep to claim a hard-fought 2-1 triumph over Tomorrow Stars in their U-15 finals.

The winning teams received a floating trophy and gold medals each, while the runners-up settled for silver medals.

In the special awards category, Showvillage United U-13 players scooped the goalkeeper and top goal scorer awards, which went to Linothando Mavuso and Siyolise Somya respectively.

In the U-15 special awards category, Tomorrow Stars goalkeeper, Sive Mavester Oyise and Liverpool striker, Asanele Bonani, were presented with trophies for their outstanding performances.

MOFA deputy president, Lukhanyo Wasa, thanked Sasko for developing youth sport.

Wasa also commended the match officials for a sterling performance during the competition.

“On behalf of MOFA, I would like to give my gratitude to Sasko for developing youth sport.

“Our LFA does not have funds to run its league competition.

“I have watched the high level of soccer that was played by MOFA juniors. It means that Sasko has helped to lift the standard of our football.

“The match officials have also been outstanding throughout the tournament,” said Wasa.
