2015-11-18 06:00

DANIEL Jones showed his supremacy in open water swimming on Sunday morning after winning the 5km swim at Settlers Dam in the second round of the Nelson Mandela Bay Aquatics’ EC Swim Series.

Leading from start to finish in the tough windy conditions on Sunday morning, Jones held off a spirited challenge from young Dylan Smith to win the 5km swim in a SA qualifying time of 1hr 6min with Smith just 3 seconds back and Nicolas Adam finishing in third place in 1hr 9min.

In the ladies’ 5km swim PEA’s Jessica Canter won in a qualifying time of 1hr 9min from Amy Mardon who also qualified in 1hr 22min.

Disabled swimmer Standford Slabbert, swimming his first 5km of the season, fought conditions particularly difficult, finishing in a time of 1hr 44min. Rebecca Newman withdrew from the 10km swim after 7.5km due to concerns of a shoulder injury. The wind caused havoc in the late morning, ripping one of the marker buoys off out of position causing the cancellation of the 3km swim as the leading swimmers were starting their last lap.

In the 1km swim it was 14-year-old Teagan Strydom who won in a time of 15min 10sec from Oscar Liss and Heinrich Vorster whilst 11-year-old Grahamstown swimmer Shaelyn Walker won the girls’ race in 18 min 19 sec from Leebe Venter and Emma Koster.

The youngest swimmer on the morning, 9-year-old Jodi Hobson from Grahamstown, finished third in the 13 and under age group in a time of 27min and 23sec. Graeme van Zyl and Liesl Brown were the victors in the 1km wetsuit category. The next EC Swim Series event will be taking place on the January 15, 2016.
