Meaning:
Dhul-Hijjah (the Month of Hajj) is the 12th and last month of the Islamic lunar year. It is during this month that the annual pilgrimage to Makkah, known as Hajj, takes place.

The actual pilgrimage rites take place on the 8th to 12th days of the month.

Meaning of the word Zul-Hijjah: - The month of “Hajj” (Pilgrimage)

About the month of Zul-Kijjah: - The fifth pillar of Islam “Hajj” is performed in this sacred month. The first ten days of Zul-Hijjah are the most virtuous days in this whole month; Hajj is performed amongst these ten days.

Significance in Islamic Calendar

?The 3nd among the 3 months of Hajj.

?According to the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, the first ten days of this month are a special time for devotion. During these days, preparations are underway for those who are undertaking the pilgrimage, and most of the actual pilgrimage rites occur. In particular, the 9th day of the month marks the Day of Arafat, and the 10th day of the month marks the Eid al-Adha (Festival of Sacrifice). Even for those who are not traveling for the pilgrimage, this is a special time to remember Allah and spend extra time in devotion and good deeds.

Important Historic Events:

) The Death of Caliph ^Uthman Ibn ^Afan, may Allah raise his rank: He died on Friday the 18th of Dhul-Hijjah, year 35 H.

) The Death of Caliph ^Umar Ibn Al-Khattab, may Allah raise his rank: He died at the age of 63, three days before the end of Dhul-Hijjah, year 23 H.

) The Prophet peace and blessings be upon him performed the farewell Hajj and gave the historic sermon known as the “Farewell Sermon”

) Egypt was conquered by the army sent by Hadhart Umar (R.A.)

) Uthmaan (R.A.) was appointed the third Caliph

) Also “Bay’ate-Aqabah” took place

) Matrimonies within Zul-Hijjah:- Hadhrat Fatimah (R.A.) was married in this holy month to the fourth Caliph Hadhrat Ali (R.A.)

Misconceptions clarified:

Divine Verse announcing the completion of the Deen of Islam was on Day of Arafah 9th Day of Dhul Hijjah 10AH.

Narrated Tariq bin Shihab: A Jew said to `Umar, “O Chief of the Believers, if this verse: ‘This day I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favors upon you, and have chosen for you, Islam as your religion.’ (5.3) had been revealed upon us, we would have taken that day as an `Id (festival) day.” `Umar said, “I know definitely on what day this Verse was revealed; it was revealed on the day of `Arafat, on a Friday.”(Sahih al-Bukhari).

By consensus of reliable and popular Muslim scholars, the verse of {Today I have completed your religion for you} was announced at `Arafah, after the Prophet (saw) delivered his farewell sermon and after the rituals of Hajj were made clear for all believers, then Allah announced the completion of this religion.

The Verse announcing conveying the Message was not revealed during the Month of Dhul Hijjah nor after Hajj.

O Messenger! Deliver what has been revealed to you from your Lord; and if you do it not, then you have not delivered His message, and Allah will protect you from the people; surely Allah will not guide the unbelieving people. (Quran 5:67)

Narrated ‘Aishah: “The Prophet (SAWS) was being guarded until this Ayah was revealed: {‘Allah will protect you from mankind.} ‘ So the Messenger of Allah (SAWS) stuck his head out from the room and said: ‘O you people! Go away, for Allah shall protect me.’”[Jami` at-Tirmidhi, Book 47, Hadith #3320. Grade: Hasan (good).

The 18th Month of Dhul Hijjah 10 AH, the event of Ghadir khum took place. This has nothing to do with who the leader is after the Prophet (SAWS). The Sunnah says that it means love and close relation. Muwalat is the opposite of Mu`adat (enmity). The proof comes from the first addition: “oh Allah waali man walaah wa `adi man `adaah”. (O Allah befriend whosoever befriends him and be the enemy of whosoever is hostile to him). So we are talking about muwalah and mu`adat (love and enmity). It is about the love of the people to Ali(RA).

It is also important to point out that the Prophet (SAWS) did not say “after me” in any authentic narration. He only said “man kuntu mawlah fa Ali mawlah” without giving any time frame. This means that this fact is timeless.
