DIRECTOR: Lasse HallstromIf you’re a dog lover and don’t like watching movies of dog’s dying this probably isn’t the best movie to watch. However, this movie is not all death and sadness. Instead it tells the story of one dog, Bailey, who gets reincarnated again and again until he finds his true purpose as a dog… The movie is based on the bestselling novel by W. Bruce Cameron, A Dog’s Purpose, from director Lasse Hallström (Hachi: A Dog’s Story, Dear John). It shares the story of one devoted dog who finds the meaning of his own existence through the lives of the humans he teaches to laugh and love. The family film, told from the dog’s perspective, stars Dennis Quaid, Peggy Lipton, Britt Robertson, K.J. Apa, Juilet Rylance, Luke Kirby, John Ortiz and Pooch Hall.Josh Gad (Olaf in Disney’s Frozen) is the voice of Bailey. The very talented Bradley Cooper was originally chosen to be the voice of Bailey, but he was eventually replaced with Gad. It is this writer’s opinion that Cooper would have been the best choice for this movie, but Gad did a good job nevertheless.Bailey’s journey starts as an untamed puppy called Toby that believes fun is his purpose in life. But he doesn’t live very long - at only a few weeks old he is captured by the pound and then put down. Cue the reincarnation (and the bubbles that go with it)….and Bailey (now a retriever) is born. His path crosses with that of a young boy, Ethan, who convinces his father to keep the puppy. Bailey decides that Ethan is his sole purpose. Fast-forward a few years later (and lots of drama in-between) and Ethan is off to college and has to leave Bailey behind, which causes an already old Bailey’s health to deteriorate quickly. Ethan's mother calls him to come say his last goodbye’s to Bailey. And this is the part where you reach for the tissues…During the following reincarnation Bailey becomes a female German shepherd police dog, Ellie, who now sees this job as her purpose. She is partnered with a bitter widowed police officer who eventually allows himself to feel loved again, thanks to a persistent Ellie. She is later killed in the line of duty and is then reincarnated into a cute Welsh Corgi named Tino.Tino’s new owner is a young college student, Maya and the two do everything together. They can even “read each other’s minds”. But after spending some time with her, Tino (or Bailey) realises she is lonely and he makes it his purpose to find her happiness. She is later married and has two children and Tino lives a long and happy life with this family until it is time to pass on.His last reincarnation was that of a St Bernard-Australian Shepherd. He was taken in by an abusive couple who had him permanently chained to a tree. They named him Waffles. His male owner eventually dumps him on an empty lot and he is then in search of a new home.A few familiar smells later and he lands up at his old house where he lived as Bailey and there he finds a familiar face – Ethan; now an older man! After some hesitation on Ethan's behalf, he is eventually taken in and is called Buddy. Will Ethan realise that Buddy is a reincarnated Bailey? We’re not giving anything away!
