THE recently released dam levels report issued by the Department of Water and Sanitation in the Eastern Cape has indicated that dam levels remain low amid water challenges in the province.

According to the statement, although residents have breathed a sigh of relief as intermittent rains raised their dam levels from 58.0% to 59.5%, the drought-stricken Kouga Dam continues to slide from 49.2% to 49.1%.

However, Darlington Dam, which gets water from the Sundays River, has slightly improved from 27.1% last week to 31.5% this week.

“Macubeni Dam in the Chris Hani District Municipality has experienced an increase from 81.3% last week to 99.4%.

“Bonkolo Dam which supplies water to Komani and surrounding areas is empty at 0%. Water is currently being drawn from Waterdown Dam, which is sitting at 52.6% compared to 68.1% this time last year.

“Xilinxa Dam in Butterworth remains at 22.1% this week but has improved when compared to 8.8% at this time last year. Due to the good rains, Mthatha Dam has improved drastically at 101.1% compared to 98.3% last week,” the statement read.

The department appealed to residents to conserve water and use it sparingly as the province still grapples with the effects of drought and water challenges.
