THE Callies 2019 table tennis open championships ended on a high note on August 10 at the Feather Market Centre.

Timothy Fitzgibbon from Cape Town won the men’s singles title in a thrilling final against top seeded Michael de Kock, of Port Elizabeth.

Fitzgibbon used his youth and quickness against De Kock to win in three straight sets 12-10, 13-11, 11-2.

In the women’s section, Xiuyan Li of PE was undefeated in the play-offs to reach the finals, where she retained the title when she beat Olive Vorster of Northern Cape 11-4; 11-7.

In the thrilling men’s doubles event, Shaheid Mamoojee teamed with De Kock to reach the final, where they lost the first two sets, but soon redeemed themselves to beat Ridhaa Jawitz and Fitzgibbon 6-11; 8-11; 13-11; 11-9; 118.

The junior boys’ singles saw the biggest upset of the day when reigning champ Cohl Simons from Komani was knocked out in the quarter finals by fellow Komani player, Rivaldo Constable, 5-11; 11-7; 13-11.

Yaaseen Abrahams (Callies Academy) beat Juan Scholtz from Pretoria 11-8; 11-9 in the semi-finals to set up a final against Constable.

The very nifty and detailed play by Constable ensured an easy win in the final, 11-6; 11-1.

The junior girls singles number one seed Renisha Jackson from Komani lost to J-Lee Lingerveld from George in the quarter-finals which saw the door open for the new players.

Nathacia Alfreds (from the Callies Academy) and Whin-Leigh Bruiners from Eden competed in the final, with Alfreds’ skilful shots setting up the win 11-6; 11-9.

The mixed doubles saw an easy victory for Li and Devon Langford who comfortably beat Caithlyn Jantjies and De Kock 11-4; 11-4.

Junior doubles – Thato Wolf and Phenyo Horing from Northern Cape beat Edwaldo Jackson and Cohl Simons from Komani by default

Men’s singles plate – Evans Eric Agbozo beat Andrey Laminie from Eden 9-11; 11-8; 11-9.

Boys’ singles plate – Stirvion du Plessis beat Edwaldo Jackson 11-4; 15-13 (both from Komani).

Girl’s singles plate – Megan Lekay from Eden beat Juane Scholtz from Pretoria 11-9; 11-6.
