THE Walmer Park Baby of the Year competition is celebrating 25 years of the cutest tots at Walmer Park when it officially kicks off this Friday, September 30.

The competition will run for four weeks, finishing off with a final prize-giving on Saturday, October 29. Entries into the Walmer Park Baby of the Year Competition close at 2pm on Sunday, October 23.

To enter your bundle of joy, simply visit the Walmer Park Shopping Centre studio in the Edgars Court on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, from this Friday to October 23, between 10am and 2pm. Here you will complete an entry form and have your baby’s photo taken by well-known photographer Debbie Louw.

The cost per entry is R50, of which R5 is donated to Ithemba Lam Baby Home. All photographs of the entries received will be on display in the centre for the duration of the competition.

Deveda Bloem, Marketing Manager of Walmer Park Shopping Centre, said, “Each year as part of the ‘feel-good’ element of the competition we strive to assist a baby’s home in our city. This year we have committed to support Ithemba Lam in Forest Hill.” The baby home is a temporary place of safety for babies. It opened in September 2009 and has just celebrated its seventh birthday.

“We work with social workers from various welfare organisations and the babies are placed in our care by the Children’s Court,” house mother Kim Fankhauser said. “While the baby is at Ithemba Lam and in a nurturing, caring and protected environment, the social worker investigates the case and finds a permanent placement for the baby.

“We provide everything for the babies during their stay with us. It is most rewarding to know that our home has been part of the life stories of many little faces; we treasure the memories of each one of those little hearts and all of our lives have been changed because of them.”

The age categories are 0-6 months, 7-12 months, 13-18 months and 19-24 months. All the ages are based on the baby’s age as at October 29.

The top 10 finalists per age category will be chosen by a panel of judges, made up of key sponsors, media partners and centre management.

On Wednesday, October 26, the top 40 finalists’ photographs will be published in PE Express.

The 40 finalists and their moms and dads need to be available for a short “meet and greet” with the judges on Tuesday, October 25. Specific times will be scheduled with the parents.

Thereafter, the top three entrants per age category will be announced at the final prize-giving on Saturday, October 29, at 10am in Walmer Park’s promotional arena, where they will be awarded their titles and prizes. Winners not present at the prize-giving at 10am will be disqualified.

All of the top 40 babies stand a chance of winning fantastic prizes from the sponsors – which are Dischem, the Baby Gym, Toddlers Workshop, Edubaby, Francarlo Designer Goldsmith, Kodak Express, Debbie Louw Photography, Edgars, Pick n Pay, Baby Builders, Circular Health, Rain, Dulce café, Capitec Bank and Happy Little Humans.

Only photos taken by Debbie Louw at the in-centre studio will be eligible for entry. Parents can collect their babies’ photos from Kodak Express Walmer Park from November 2, and not before.
