IN last week’s edition the PE Express published an article about the shocking state the Northern suburbs is in with regard to illegal dumping and the general filth all around.
The following SMS comments were received from readers:I just read your article ‘Filthy northern areas’. My sister and I recently travelled from JHB to PE on the Shosholoza train, where we saw a black rubbish bag be thrown out of the train which landed on an enormous amount of rubbish next to the rails, spread over a few kms - there was no settlement in view! Poor show! - Margriet
I was shocked but not surprised to see how our city is being turned into a massive dump. Our Metro is trying hard to return our city around but they need everyone’s co-operation and that includes the people living in the northern areas. There are some suggestions: 1) Start with the young ones in school, educating them on the dangers of littering, where rats mice and snakes can take over their homes and make them ill. 2) How about an Incentive Programme where trophies are awarded for excellent work in keeping their area clean and tidy. 3) Install sorting bins in various places and teach them what the bins are for. 4) This could also be a source of income for some of themselves (authorised by the Metro) to take glass, plastic, cardboard, etc. to the various depots, for a remuneration. I hope these ideas will help against the littering. - J. van Eeden
The same is happening in Stanford Rd and Durban Rd in Korsten. - Anonymous
