DESPITE the tragedy that struck the Under the Tree Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centre earlier this year, their Grade R learners, together with their proud parents, came together in celebration for the annual graduation ceremony recently.

Under the Tree ECD, which is located in Markman, officially opened for business on November 23 last year and less than a year later, on October 30, this year, it burnt down due to arson.

Shoprite, who is committed to support those who #ActForChange in their local communities, hosted the graduation for the 20 learners who will be attending Grade 1 next year.

“We didn’t want the children to think that their hard work was in vain because the school burnt down. We wanted to end the year properly and give them the graduation they deserve,” said Tia Wessels (80), the director of Family Restoration Services, an organisation that runs numerous children empowerment programmes, including Under the Tree ECD.

“Thanks to Shoprite we were able to do that. Their donation of refreshments, certificates, photographer, transport costs and party packets are much appreciated,” said Wessels.
