IKHAMVA Athletics Club athlete, Melikhaya Frans, was the overall winner of the ninth Motherwell Freedom Run 10km, which started and finished at the Motherwell NU 2 Stadium on April 27.

The Freedom Run 10km, together with the 5km fun run, which recorded a total of 1 200 athletes, produced some fireworks right from the beginning to its finish.

The race attracted some high profile road-runners from other provinces like Central Gauteng Athletics’ David Manja, Boxer superstore AC’s Thabang Mosiako, independent runners Lusapho April and Duane Fortuin in the senior men’s, as well as Boxer Superstore AC twins Diana-Lebo and Lebogang Phalula and Zimbabwean runner Rudo Mkhonderwa in the senior women’s category.

Frans, who finished each kilometre mark in under three minutes, broke away from the bunch of top runners more than halfway through.

The competition in the front was between Frans and Manja, but the Ikhamva Athletic Club star finished the race in 29:08, beating Manja by only a second.

Thabang Mosiako came third after he finished the race in 29:32.

In the senior ladies’ category, Zimbabwean runner Mkhonderwa was the overall winner, after she recorded a time of 34:20, with the Phalula twins Diana-Lebo and Lebogang finishing second and third at the time of 34:27 and 35:35 respectively.
