CALLING all cat or dog lovers! The Animal Welfare Society Port Elizabeth (AWS PE) is desperately in need of the community’s assistance this festive season.

According to Janine van Zyl, community liaison for AWS PE, they receive many stray, unwanted and abandoned pets over the festive season and they need a little help to keep their furry friends going.

“On average, 10 lost, unwanted, abandoned and neglected dogs and cats arrive at AWS PE every day over the December and January festive season period. Our vet sees every animal and our veterinary expenses skyrocket over this period, which puts a huge strain on our already limited funds.”

They rely on the public for support and receive no assistance from the government. AWS PE has more than 200 animals in their care at any one time and never turn any animals away.

“Many of the dogs and cats that come to us are strays. In order to ensure a speedy reunion with your pet, please make sure that all your pets have a collar and ID tag with your phone number on or get your pet microchipped before you go away on holiday,” she said.

“If your pet has gone missing, take action immediately. Phone or visit all the local vets in your area and visit all the shelters in person to see if your dog or cat has been brought in.

“Contact your neighbours and ask them to keep a look out for your missing pet. You can also send details of your missing pets to the Animal Welfare Society PE Facebook page.”

To keep the local Animal Welfare Society up and running, go to www.animalwelfarepe.co.za to donate and help an animal in need this festive season.
