Hundreds of unemployed residents enrolled since August ’16

OVER the last six months, 447 unemployed residents have been given an opportunity to learn a trade or skill through the Municipality’s Unemployed Learner Programmes.

Funding secured from the Local Government Sector Education and Training Authority (LGSETA) allowed administration to secure spaces at various colleges across the Metro for these learners.

In a media statement, the Metro said, “A total of 250 of these learners are already six months into an Adult Education and Training Literacy Course, which has seen some promising results and progress.”

“Another 35 learners will this year begin a three-year apprenticeship in either bricklaying, carpentry, fitting and turning, electrical or boilermaking. All other learners will be taking courses in road marking, municipal finance and Microsoft certified solutions.”

The Metro’s Corporate Services Directorate, headed up by Councillor Dean Biddulph, has embraced its responsibility to develop skills and empower unemployed citizens with expertise necessary to find work.

On March 9, 2017, the Mayoral Committee approved a plan to see the municipality partnering with Harambee, an NGO that focuses on youth employment, to create over 20 000 job opportunities over three years for the youth in the Metro.

This will go to council for final approval at the end of the month. – REPORTER
