AN arts and culture umbrella organisation for the youth of Walmer township has been inspiring the community with the songs and dances of traditional South Africa.

The Izilo Zakwantu organisation focuses on the various traditional dances where the beat of the drum leads the feet to movements of historical and rich isiXhosa culture. “I want to share my knowledge of dance and music to the youth so that they may never forget where they come from,” said Elvis Mveni, who is the leader of the Izilo Zakwantu organisation.

Under the wing of this organisation is a dance group Izangoma Zomthonyama which consists of young children from the ages of 7 to 12. The dance group is currently aiming at stamping their mark on the Bay with their cultural dance moves and songs.

Earlier this year, the dance group showcased their talent at the Bayworld Oceanarium, the Splash Festival and a cruise liner at the harbour.

“I wanted this to be a form of an extramural activity for the children and to steer them away from bad habits,” concluded Mveni.

The Izangoma Zomthonyama also invites other young children to join the group and explore the rich history of isiXhosa traditional dancing and songs.
