A YOUNG KwaMagxaki woman, Chwayita Hlohloza, has published an English poetry book entitled Expressions, which she hopes to launch at eMakaleni B&B, Nghona Street, KwaMagxaki, on Saturday, October 15.

“The anthology of 50 poems is a collection of inner thoughts of a bipolar person with mixed emotions of sad, sweet and lovely stories of life,” said Hlohloza (23), who is an N5 financial management student at the PE College Russell Road Campus.

Hlohloza, who matriculated at KwaMagxaki High, started writing poetry while a pupil at Sivuyiseni Primary. Her big break came when she saw her poem Humanity and Dignity published in 2007.

This was in a competition run by prolific Port Elizabeth writer Mzi Mahola on behalf of the Ubuntu Education Fund.

“My poem came second. The encouragement I received from Mr Mahola kept me going. I never stopped writing poetry,” said Hlohloza, adding that attending the Nelson Mandela Bay Arts and Culture writers’ workshop after winning in a writers’ competition had opened the doors for her.

“I became part of the seven metro writers chosen to attend the Wordfest at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown this year. Seeing published writers inspired me a great deal,” she said, rattling off the names of Dongadala, Ligo and Isiswenye Sesihobe as some of published poets who had touched a nerve.

Publishing, however, had not been easy, Hlohloza said. Publishing companies had complained of financial constraints making it pretty hard to publish “until I was introduced to the idea of self-publishing,” which she was able to do through the assistance of Dr Mzimkhulu Joseph Fatman, to whom she was very grateful.

“Through his donation, I was able to edit and do layout, binding and printing of the book,” she said.

She said the launch would include live poetry performances, music and motivational speakers.

Entrance is R100. The normal price of the book is R100, but people attending will get a 50% discount.
