LION City were on top of their game, collecting the maximum number of points when they overcame Butterworth FC 2-0 in their ABC Motsepe League clash which took place at Motherwell NU 2 Stadium on Saturday.

Despite the windy weather conditions, City managed to get the lion’s share in ball possession. The visitors seemed to have a tough time playing against the wind.

The two sides played the first stanza without a goal. City nearly broke the ice, but Zukisani Benni Ngalo’s efforts went over the goalposts of Butterworth FC.

It appeared as if the visiting side came to play for a draw as they defended in numbers, leaving their big striker, Athabile Makaya, a lone ranger up front.

Zukisa Makgopa and Phumelele Msila kept a watchful eye on Makaya. The home side supporters waited for a very long time to see their left full back, Amazulu Ngcoza, score a long-range goal from a set piece that left goalkeeper Yanga Msutu well-beaten in the 81st minute.

The game turned out to be a cagey affair after Butterworth players resorted to foul play, but the referee asserted his authority.

The right moment came when City’s super substitute, Anele Mabhekaphantsi Ngqunge, unleashed a scorcher from the 35m area to beat goalkeeper Msutu. The final score was 2-0 in the referee’s additional time.
