A TEAM of seven students from the Phoenix Taekwon Do club in Port Elizabeth successfully represented the Eastern Cape at the National Korean Martial Arts Tournament which took place in Potchefstroom on August 5 and 6.

The tournament hosted all the different Korean martial arts forms and is a South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) and Martial Arts South Africa (MASA) affiliated tournament.

The taekwon do students had to compete against other Korean martial arts styles, making the tournament even more difficult as many new rules and competition items were introduced. They had a difficult time preparing for the unknown, but managed to return to Port Elizabeth as winners.

The seven members won the following:

. Cleyvon Frank – one gold and one bronze medal

. Chadré Frank – one silver and one bronze medal

. Benjamin Miller – two gold medals

. Kalinka Vermaak – two bronze medals

. Keenan Nel – two gold medals

. Arné de Wet – a bronze medal

The Phoenix Taekwon Do club students will compete for their provincial colours at the Taekwon Do Chang Hon Ryu National Championships in Cape Town next month.

The championships take place on September 23 and 24.
