Local taekwon do club excels at nationals

A TOTAL of 37 students from the Phoenix Taekwon Do club in Port Elizabeth successfully represented the Eastern Cape at the 2017 Chang Hon Ryu (CHR) National Championship that was recently hosted by the Mercury Taekwon Do club in Cape Town.

Several days and many hours of hard work resulted in the team bringing home 28 gold, 26 silver and 19 bronze medals.

The students participated in the Eastern Cape Province Selections and Korean Martial Arts tournaments to be selected as part of the official Eastern Cape Province team for the CHR National Championship.

Based on their results and qualifying criteria, a number of team members were awarded their Eastern Cape provincial colours and Eastern Cape district colours.

  • Eastern Cape provincial colours: Benjamin Miller, Desiree Booysen, Kalinka Vermaak, JD Claassen, Keenan Nel and Arné de Wet.
  • Eastern Cape district colours: Annika Vermaak, Cody Claassen, Amanda de Wet, Cayden Coetzee, Ruben Aylward, Rikus Aylward, Cozette Vermaak, Larushé Grigor, Juan Grigor, Ray-Dylan Wilkinson, Aiden Wilkinson, Jaylee Momberg, Nathan Botha, Keagan Rheeder, Damian Joubert, Christelle Stander, Dewald Stander, Jayden Dorfling, Bwalya Witika, Meagan Reid, Tapiwa Chindeka and Nick McMichael.

The CHR National Championships was the final tournament for 2017 for taekwon do in the Eastern Cape and students are now preparing for their final grading for the year which will be held at the end of November.
