MOTHERWELL RFC managed to salvage a hard-earned 10-7 victory when they took on a gutsy Kwaru RFC in their EP Rugby Union Grand Challenge Shield Cup battle at Motherwell NU1 Rugby Stadium on Saturday.

Hundreds of rugby spectators braved the chilly, wet weather conditions to cheer their teams on. The atmosphere was electrifying.

The noise from the stands motivated the players who produced the most exciting game of rugby on the pitch.

Mamie, as Motherwell RFC are affectionately called by its loyal supporters, applied pressure on the Zwide side, which was more than prepared to absorb the pressure.

The home side skipper, Abulele Mbande, and scrumhalf, Ace Rhune, showed that they meant business in front of their diehard supporters.

Mamie ranker Lelethu Beast Nameka, who produced a solitary run, was nearly rewarded with a try, but Kwaru RFC’s hard-working captain, Siyanda Nombombo, tackled the heavy forward.

Mamie were awarded a penalty and Rhune registered three points from the kick.

Rhune initiated a good move that resulted in an opening try from Xolisa Masuthu. Rhune’s conversion increased Mamie’s lead to 10-0 until the interval.

Kwaru threw everything into the game, with Mamie defending. Kwaru’s Phumlani Ramba was the key man who motivated his side to launch an attack.

Kwaru’s Nombombo scored his side’s only try, which was converted by Xolelani Mrwebi, to decrease the deficit to 10-7.

Kwaru could have won the game in the end, but they failed to collect six points from two penalties.

In the end, Mamie won the game 10-7 with their reserve side defeating Kwaru reserves 15-5 in an exciting game.

In another game that was played at Wolfson Stadium, Zwide United RFC defeated St Marks 14-9, while Zwide United RFC reserves were beaten 19-17 by St Marks.
