March to encourage awareness of elder abuse

2018-06-13 06:02

AS a means of commemorating World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on Friday, The Honour the Aged Committee from the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality will today mobilise elderly people from around the metro area to take part in an awareness march in Arcadia, in order to create awareness of the existence of this social ill.

Age-in-Action Eastern Cape will also be hosting a Hip-Hop Against Elder Abuse Campaign in Springbok Street in Gelvandale on Friday.

According to a statement, these local events will heighten awareness that elder abuse is a serious local issue that must be addressed.

“Age-in-Action Eastern Cape’s vision is that we join with partners around the globe in declaring that we will not fail the men and women who raised us, sacrificed for us, and shaped our world.

“Many older persons in the Eastern Cape Province have fallen prey to scams involving loans on their SASSA cards.

“Scammers appear professionally dressed and deceive our grandparents to provide their identity numbers, bank cards and pin numbers. We want to urge older persons NOT to divulge any personal information to strangers and rather seek advice from their nearest SASSA office,” the statement read.

Communities, schools and faith-based organisations are being challenged to support the elderly this year by arranging peaceful marches and organising exhibitions and educational talks where the elderly are included so that they can feel respected.
