“OUR lives have changed drastically since the birth of Zayne. It’s all about Mr Zayne Starbuck, but we love him to bits and wouldn’t change a thing. He is God’s precious gift to us.”

This is how Chantelle van der Merwe, mother of this year’s Front Page Christmas Baby winner, Zayne Lukas Starbuck, feels about the birth of her and her partner, Jason Starbuck’s, first born.

“Zayne is daddy’s boy,” Van der Merwe said.

The family will be spending Zayne’s first Christmas in Hermanus, where he will be receiving many different types of baby toys in his stocking. “But our favourite gift (for him) is a blue electronic motorbike,” she said.

He was born on May 6 this year, but is still not sleeping through the night, his mother said.

“He moans every hour for a bottle, then has two sips and goes back to sleep.”

His favourite foods are the fruity range of purity. “His favourite snack is flings.”

Zayne’s favourite toy is his Mickey Mouse rattle.

His parents believe he will start crawling soon. “He is a bit lazy, but is on the verge of crawling. He rolls onto both sides and can sit by himself.”

His mother added that he is a curious and very friendly boy and just loves attention.

“He is a very easy boy, just very spoilt,” Van der Merwe laughed. “He cries immediately when you put him down.”

According to her his name was a group effort.

“We picked three names and asked family members to vote for what they prefered. His name means ‘God is gracious’ and his second name was chosen from the Bible.”
