  • ATHOL TROLLIP – Executive Mayor

Trollip, an ex-farmer and former leader of the DA in the Eastern Cape and in parliament, is an outspoken “hunter” who is focused on tackling corruption.


Lawack has been a councillor for many years and is a former principal of Fontein Primary School.


Senekal completed LLB graduate studies in 2011 with Unisa and has been a councillor since 2011.

  • MONGAMELI BOBANI – Public Health

The deputy mayor is a lawyer who is determined to take on the challenge of establishing a clean, healthy metro.

  • ANNETTE LOVEMORE – Infrastructure and Engineering

She is a former DA MP with a passion for sustainable water use. She has a degree in chemistry and mathematics and is completing her legal studies.

  • RETIEF ODENDAAL – Budget and Treasury

A lawyer and former leader of the opposition in the council, who has been a member of the budget and treasury committee for seven years.

  • RANO KAYSER – Roads and Transport

Kayser, a human resource practitioner, was a COPE councillor before he joined the DA. This is his second term as councillor.

  • JOHN BEST – Safety and Security

Best, a former policeman who retired as brigadier, also served on the committee for the metro police. He was head of the local organising committee of the Soccer World Cup.

  • NQABA BHANGA – Human Settlements

This former DA MP has a degree in public administration. He helped to establish the metro’s department of social housing.

  • ANDREW WHITFIELD – Economic Development, Tourism and Agriculture

With an honours degree in politics and international relations, this former DA MP focused on tourism in parliament.

He has been a councillor for many years. He describes his department as a Cinderella department which plays an integral role in the municipality.

She has been a councillor for 10 years. She says that all she ever wanted to do was to serve the people.

  • SIYASANGA SIJADU – Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture

The youngest committee member (25) is a member of the coalition partner COPE. She is a master’s student in applied media studies at NMMU.

  • LANCE GROOTBOOM – Municipal Public Accounts

He is a lawyer with a passion for community service.
