PORT Elizabethan, Dr Pumla Mhlaba, gave new meaning to the phrase “you are never too old to learn”, when she recently graduated from Stellenbosch University (SU) alongside her daughter, Vuyelwa.

Pumla received her Postgraduate Diploma in Family Medicine on December 6, while Vuyelwa received her Honours Degree in Accounting on December 7.

“It is has been a lovely experience graduating together and I couldn’t be more proud of my mom – she is also very proud of me,” said Vuyelwa. “We are now both part of the Stellenbosch Alumni of 2016 and that is a special connection we will always share.”

Pumla’s mother, Barbara, said she couldn’t be prouder of her family for their achievements.

Vuyelwa will start her articles at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) in Cape Town in January next year. She aspires to be an entrepreneur and run her own group of multi-national companies.

Pumla, who works at the Family Medicine Department of Dora Nginza Hospital, plans to further her studies and is interested in forensic medicine.

She hopes to lecture at the planned medical school in Port Elizabeth. – REPORTER
