Municipal app to aid housing applicants

2019-04-17 06:02

RESIDENTS in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro will now be able to monitor the status of their subsidy housing through the municipal mobile application.

This step comes after the National Human Settlements Minister, Nomaindiya Mfeketho, recently told hundreds of Bay residents to make use of the application at the launch of the Smart Housing Needs Register.

According to municipal spokesperson, Mthubanzi Mniki, this option on the mobile application was launched to operate as a smart city.

“The municipality wants to be efficient, fair and transparent. The aim of this option is also to deliver a better service to our people,” Mniki said.

The mobile application can be downloaded on any android smart phone via PlayStore, by searching for ‘NMBM Mobile Application’.

The application allows residents to click on the housing icon where they will be required to insert their ID number in order to receive feedback.

The system has been made in such a way that an applicant will know how far their application is, whether all application documents have been submitted and also if their applications have been accepted or rejected.

Mniki added, “Communities will no longer travel long distances and spend net income on transport to visit municipal offices in town. They will be able to check their status in the comfort of their homes or wherever they are around the world.

“The data will be used in the fair and transparent allocation of houses. It will protect communities against people who would want to manipulate the system for selfish interests.”

The system has built in security features and access restrictions. Residents will be able to check their own details and place them on the waiting list.

It will serve as a source of information to be used in the process of the planning, development, funding and allocation of housing opportunities.

According to Mniki, the system will address corruption related to waiting lists and allocation of housing opportunities.

Mniki commented, “It will ensure that delivery is aligned with the need in the waiting list. Communities will have confidence in the system and thus relations between the city and its communities will improve.

A transparent and fair system will also help reduce unlawful land invasions.”

In addition, the municipality will embark on an awareness programme to introduce the system across the City.
