NAF celebrates 10 years with a twist

2016-09-21 06:00

IT has been ten years since the dream of Billy Paulson to have a celebration of the arts in the northern suburbs of Port Elizabeth become a reality.

The very first Northern Arts Festival (NAF) ten years ago took place in the Van Der Kemps Kloof and drew more than 12 000 people.

In the following years the NAF was held at various venues, the biggest festival being the one held at Varsvlei in 2010 - drawing a crowd of 40 000.

The annual NAF, which coincides with Heritage Day, has, with its mix of music, arts and crafts, become a favourite among the community.

“We as organisers pride ourselves on the fact that the festival has given exposure to a plethora of local entertainers and artists,” said festival director Billy Paulson.

To celebrate the milestone of its tenth year, the organisers of NAF have decided to do it a bit differently this year. It will feature a short film festival and sports matches.

“After nine years of doing the same thing, we have looked at feedback from the community and decided to make some positive changes.

“The programme line-up consists of a short film festival, arts and crafts, cuisine, sports, fireworks, music, dance and family entertainment. Music artists such as saxophonist Andrew Young and a host of local musicians such as Miss Mona, PE’s Finest, S-MHA, Charmaine Allison, Heath Cliffe, Junant and the 2016 Sky’s The Limit Talent Search participants will be showcased,” Paulson said.

This year’s NAF will be held at the Marock Sports Grounds from 2pm to 8pm on Friday, September 23, and from 9am to 7pm on Saturday, September 24. For more info contact the NAF office on 041 481 2301 or email
