THE Ndzondelelo and Loyiso high schools won the Africa Unite Challenge tournament at the Loyiso High School fields in Zwide.

The aim of the event was to raise awareness of Heritage Day and to bring the community youth together.

The tournament organiser, Cebisa Diniwe (25), stated that the event was the right tool to bring the youth together, in particular through sport.

“In sport the players and even the spectators are equipped with life skills,” Diniwe said. “They learn to accept the referees’ decisions and they also share the skills. They learn to acknowledge the achievements of their opponents. Sport is life.”

The high schools that took part in the tournament’s soccer semifinals were Loyiso, Sakhisizwe, Ndzondelelo and Phakamisa.

The schools, with the exception of Phakamisa, faced each other in netball as well in a round-robin system.

In netball, Ndzondelelo collected four points, while Loyiso managed to secure two points. Sakhisizwe, however, did not register any victory.

In the soccer semifinals, Ndzondelelo went down 2-1 against Sakhisizwe, while Loyiso punished Phakamisa 3-0.

In the finals Loyiso collected silver medals after they defeated Sakhisizwe 6-5 in a sudden death play-off after the 1-1 full-time score.

The winning schools went home with a floating trophy and gold medals, while the runners-up were awarded silver medals.

Diniwe said he would like the tournament to be played at a regional level so that it became a national event.

“I rely on sponsors because I am unemployed,” he said.

“In essence, there are people who are always willing to support the needy people. Furthermore, I would like the participating schools to get kit and equipment.

“I would like to thank Dr Bongani Nqini for making this event a success. Dr Nqini is one of our community developers because he has a passion for community sport.

“He is approachable and compassionate. I am very proud to announce that Dr Nqini bought the trophies and medals for the whole tournament. I would also like to extend my gratitude to my co-organiser, Mpho Senti.”
