Nelson Mandela Bay metro plans holiday hikes

THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Public Health Directorate under the Environmental Management and Education have something in store for those who enjoy nature and walking.

A programme of public hikes has been arranged by the Municipality during the coming school holidays, courtesy of the Environmental Education Section that falls under the Environmental Management Sub-Directorate in the Public Health Directorate.

School-Holiday Programme:

Guided Hiking Trails:

The following hikes will be undertaken during the December 2015 – January 2016 School Holidays, as part of the Metro’s guided trails to the general public and are free of charge. These hikes are suitable for all ages and fitness levels.

Sacramento Hiking Trail:

Schoenmakerskop: follow Victoria Drive all the way to the end. Meet at the Cannon in Schoenmakerskop

Date: December 15, 2015

Time: 9:30am (3-4 hours)

Settlers Park Hiking Trail:

How Avenue, next to the St George’s private hospital: Follow the road until you see the gates to the park on your left hand side. There is a safe parking area within the reserve. Meet at the parking area inside the reserve.

Date: December 21, 2015

Time: 9:30am (3-4 hours)

Van Stadens Hiking Trail:

Go into the Van Stadens Nature Reserve, and meet in front of the first office. Follow the road from the N2 Van Stadens turn-off. Turn left.

Date: January 6, 2016

Time: 9:30am (2-3 hours)

Cape Recife Hiking Trail:

Follow Marine Drive to Cape Recife, and take a left turn to Pine Lodge, and meet in front of the boom gate.

Meeting Place: Pine Lodge boom gate

Date: January 11, 2016

Time: 9:30am (2-4 hours)

What to bring along:

  • Packed lunch
  • Stout walking shoes or takkies
  • Water bottle (juice or water)
  • A Hat and sun block
  • A Jacket (For the changing weather patterns, it gets windy on the trails).

Some of the hikes might not be suitable for very young children.
