WITH summer just around the corner, final preparations are being put in place for the two local open water swimming events sanctioned by Nelson Mandela Bay Aquatics, the aQuellé Ocean Racing Series and the EC Swim Series which is still looking for a naming sponsor for this season.

Exciting changes are being added to both these events.

The aQuellé Ocean Racing Series, going into its 12th Season, is unique to Nelson Mandela Bay and is Africa’s largest family beach event with something for the whole family on offer.

In this fortnightly Series, ocean swim events are complemented with beach events which include a 5km Beach Run, 5km Beach Walk and a Kids’ 12 years and under 1km Beach Run with two loaded prize giving ceremonies, one for kids and another for adults, at the end of each of the 10 race days during the Season.

The Series kicks off on Friday, October 14, with the registration function at News Café ahead of round 1 on Sunday, October 16. This year round 1 will be a significant race day in that double points are being offered towards the overall Series standings.

A new addition to the Ocean Racing Series, to complement the popular 1km, 2km and 3km Ocean Swim races, will be a 400m swim which has been requested by local lifesavers, nippers and novice triathletes who aren’t quite ready to tackle a 1km sea swim.

The Series race days take place on mostly alternate Sunday mornings with registration opening from 7.30am and racing getting underway at 9am followed by kids’ prize giving at 10am and the adult prize giving immediately thereafter.

Online registration is highly recommended with a R30 manual entry penalty applicable for entries made on the morning of the event. See for further information and registration into the Series.

The only Swimming South Africa sanctioned event in the Eastern Cape available for swimmers to secure qualifying times for the SA Open Water Nationals is the EC Swim Series which will be returning to Marina Martinique this season under the management of Zsports Events NPC.

The Series kicks off on Sunday, October 23, with 5 rounds in the Series which include the NMBA Championship events on the weekend of February 4.

October’s race day will be followed by two in November (6th and 20th) and another on January 15. At each of the race days, swimmers will be able to compete in a 10km, 5km, 3km, 1km and 500m swim in the tranquil waters of Marina Martinique in Jeffrey’s Bay.

Race day registrations will open alongside the Marina Wharf Bistro from 8am with the 10km and 5km events kicking off at 9am, followed by the 1km and 500m swims around 9:05am. The 3km swim will start at 11am.

See for further info and to register. Late entry fees will apply for swimmer registrations on the day.
