A BRAND-NEW outdoor gym has recently been made available to residents of Ward 8 in Port Elizabeth, to use for free, for a healthy and balanced lifestyle.

The outdoor gym, situated in Sedan Avenue in Lorraine, was opened to members of the public who were invited to try out the equipment and give their opinion.

The equipment includes steppers, exercise bikes, sit-up stools and weights -– all permanently and securely mounted in the park.

According to the ward councillor, Gustav Rautenbach, the outdoor gym is a place where families can relax and enjoy spending time together.

“We want to thank the municipality’s Parks Department for making this possible.

“I have installed various other play parks in my ward, but this will be the cherry on top for most residents.

“Plans are in place to use the open fields in Ward 8 to create more parks. We saw the need for the outdoor gym so that residents can be able to keep fit and healthy.

“This gym does not only allow our residents to get healthy outdoors, but the facility can be enjoyed by old and young, able and disabled,” Rautenbach said. The facility comes as an upgrade to the site where a play park is already established.

Rautenbach added, “I have decided to install the outdoor gym near the play park for residents to enjoy while their children are playing in the park. I want to urge our community to make use of this facility and also to take good care of the equipment.

“At the end of the day, the outdoor gym belongs to the community.”

Those in attendance at the launch broke a sweat within a few minutes and some said they would use the equipment regularly.

Christal George, hospital manager at Lorraine Life Frail Care Centre, said that the new outdoor gym would keep residents at the centre fit and active.

“We are very grateful for the outdoor gym, as most of our patients will make use of this facility. We are situated in Sedan Avenue, just opposite the park. It is the perfect opportunity for our patients to maintain a healthy lifestyle,” George said.

Ann van der Merwe, from Ann’s Frail Care and retirement village in Lorraine, said, “This is a fantastic addition to what is now a wonderful overall outdoor health activity area. I appreciate the newly-built outdoor gym. It’s a safe haven for our people.

“We do exercises in our centre and this outdoor gym will help. To me, this is definitely a benefit because we don’t have access to a gym. We will be doing a morning or afternoon gym session followed by a picnic.”

According to Rautenbach, future plans for Sedan Park include making it more disabled friendly, installing more benches and planting more trees.

Rautenbach said, “I want to make it convenient for all residents to enjoy the park. I have also installed lighting for people to make use of the outdoor gym at night. The best part is that it can be used free of charge.

“I also want to install outdoor gyms in other areas of Ward 8, which will take time. However, I am looking forward to seeing all our residents using these facilities.”
