New road to open next month

MOTORISTS using Glen Hurd Drive, also known as the 3rd Avenue Dip, will be pleased to know that the extension of Restitution Avenue, which has been under construction for over a year, will be opened next month.

According to Ward 6 Councillor, Morné Steyn, the official date received from the contractor is May 23. The PE Express reported in February 2018 about the commencement of the extension of Restitution Avenue underneath the William Moffett bridge to connect with Glen Hurd Drive.

The road had previously been unfinished for years due to there being no budget for an extension. The completed extension will bring relief to traffic congestion in the dip. The new two-way road connects to the dip, enabling traffic to flow into Glen Hurd Drive without using Alan Drive. The existing Glen Hurd Drive will become a one-way road, in the direction of Mangold Park from Newton Park.

“After public participation with the residents of Glen Hurd, Walmer Downs and Mangold Park, changes were made to the original plan, which entailed making Glen Hurd Drive obsolete. Instead, it was decided to still use Glen Hurd Drive, but as a one-way road. Residents gave their input and the majority was pleased with the changes,” Steyn said.

The project consists of two phases, the first being the extension and phase two a bridge being built in the dip. According to Steyn, funding needs to be sought for the bridge and time frames are unclear. The cost of phase one was estimated at R13 million.
