NGO launches new programme

2018-03-28 06:02

THE Port Elizabeth branch of the National Institute for Crime Prevention and the Reintegration of Offenders (NICRO) saw a long-term goal realised when they officially launched their ex-offender programme on Friday, March 23.

Over the more than 100 years since it was founded, NICRO has proven to be one of South Africa’s greatest unsung heroes as an organisation that specialises in social crime prevention and offender reintegration.

It boasts a rich, unparalleled history of success in helping young and adult offenders get their lives back on track and moulding them to become responsible, contributing members of society.

According to Kubashinie Coopasamy, the social work supervisor at NICRO Port Elizabeth, they set a longstanding benchmark in their work with young and adult offenders which led to the launch of the social reintegration programme.

The theme of the event was “Together against crime…It starts with you”.

“Through its initiative, NICRO mobilises various sectors of society to support the creation and enhancement of an environment,” Coopasamy said.

“This promotes positive, healthy and sustainable lifestyles as an alternative to crime and anti-social, risky behaviour of offenders,” she added.

NICRO equips the individuals with skills that will help them cope when they are released back into society.

“The goal of the offender reintegration programme is to reduce the obstacles and challenges that prisoners have to face one they are released, which reduces the likelihood that they will commit an offence after their release,” Coopasamy explained.
