HUNDREDS of enthusiastic supporters flocked to the Raymond Mhlaba Sport Centre to watch their sides take each other on during the Nelson Mandela Bay Basketball Association (NMBBA) Mayoral Cup games last Wednesday night.

The supporters watched two games in the men’s division, one between the Expandables and Spartans and the other between the NMMU Madibaz and Gemineyez.

Both games were highly entertaining, with the Spartans cruising easily through their game to defeat the Expandables 124-58.

The NMMU Madibaz-Gemineyez clash was the most enthralling right from the word go to the final minute. Finally, Gemineyez managed to overcome the Madibaz 72-65, with the fans being kept on their feet.

NMBBA deputy president Sibongile Fondini said the tournament was expected to end on November 14. He added that the U18 games were going to be played at Khwezi Lomso High School. Fondini, who was visibly excited, stated that he was over the moon about the inclusion of basketball in the Mayoral Cup Competition for the first time.

“We are indeed extremely delighted about participation in this competition as we have put a lot of hard work in recent years into development and promoting our game in the Nelson Mandela Bay region,” he said.

“This inclusion is a true testimony to what we are doing to develop the youth in basketball and it will allow the game to grow more and more.”
