THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality lent a helping hand to local farmers and gardeners in the metro, last Wednesday, by supplying garden equipment, seeds and other farming necessities.

Local farmers and gardeners gathered at the City Hall to receive their brand new equipment and seeds, which will enable them to generate an income.

The selected few were evaluated by a screening committee from the Departments of Economic Development, Tourism and Agriculture and ultimately approved by the Mayoral Committee.

“The municipality does not have a budget for rural development and land reform. However, a budget of R1.1 million has been allocated to assist emerging rural farmers,” Executive Mayor Athol Trollip said.

Approximately R700 000 was spent by the municipality to repair bore-holes and to assist with fencing, generators, pumps and wheelbarrows.

“Some of the things that we have assisted the local farmers with are not enough. However, I do want to say that you can do so much with the little with agriculture,” Trollip added.

The equipment given to the local farmers is to assist in planting, cultivating and harvesting. “Land needs to be made productive.

“It is productive when it rains and the grass grows and animals can eat the grass.

“But it needs to be managed and looked after.

“You have to plant in order to harvest.”

However, the municipality cannot create jobs for everyone.

“This programme cannot create jobs, but we can create some independence where food can be produced to provide for their families and even to sell.”

As Trollip called forth those selected to receive new equipment and seeds; the crowd of local farmers and gardeners cheered and celebrated in appreciation for the goods received.
