THE radiology department at Livingstone Tertiary Hospital is planning to celebrate the awareness of the biggest killer of women: breast cancer.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month started on Monday and will continue throughout the month of October.

“Radiologists, by virtue of their profession and the services they render, when it comes to the diagnosis and treatment of their patients who suffer from this condition, they want to make a difference in reaching out to people,” said Busi Ngceshe, a spokesperson for Livingstone Hospital.

The department is, therefore, planning to host two events this month to raise awareness about breast cancer.

The first is an awareness campaign that will take place in the radiology department on October 24.

The staff will be wearing breast cancer awareness T-shirts while they pay a visit to the oncology department to hand toiletries over to patients and another visit to OPD to hand healthy fruits and juice to the patients.

Makro was keen to get on board to sponsor toothpaste, facecloths, soap and lotion to the 36 patients.

Pamphlets containing details about the signs and symptoms of breast cancer, as well as breast self-examination, will also be handed out to staff members and the public.

The second event is the Breast Clinic Day, hosted by the radiology department, which will take place on October 26.

Breast Clinic Day will double as an open day from 14:00 when LTH Radiographers will offer screening services to the female staff members.
