Oos-Kaap skermspan op pad na kampioenskappe in Moederstad

GROOT opwinding heers onder die Oos-Kaap skermspan wat op 6 en 7 Februarie aan die SA Skerm kampioenskappe in Kaapstad gaan deelneem.

Van hulle neem ook deel aan Moderne Vyfkamp wat skerm insluit. Atlete onder 19 hoef nog nie perd te spring en doen vier items, naamlik swem, skerm, hardloop en skiet met ’n laser-pistool.

Die span bestaan uit 15 skermers van die Excelsior EC skermklub in PE en vier van die Nemato skermklub in Port Alfred.

“Skerm is baie jonk in die Oos-Kaap en daarom het ons besluit om so ’n groot span te stuur sodat die kinders die groter prentjie van skerm op nasionale vlak kan sien,” het die span se hoofafrigter en voorsitter van die Skermvereniging in die Oos-Kaap, oud Vyfkamp Springbok Jessica Raper, gesê.

“Skerm is ’n baie individuele sport en dus pas dit sekere kinders uitstekend. Dit word ook fisieke skaak genoem omdat dit die kritiese denke en probleemoplossing van die persoon stimuleer.”

Mede-afrigter, Protea vyfkampatleet, Jon-Paul Raper het dit beaam. “Die dissipline en lewensvaardighede wat skermers leer be- voordeel ook die kinders se vordering op skool,” het hy gesê. Die klub is oop vir almal van agt jaar tot en met veterane vlak.

(o.17): Isabella Finestone, Ben Laws, Daniel Barreto, Zanele Daka (Nemato)

(o.15): Kayla Ferreira, Monique Ferreira, Sophia Finestone, Thulani Ngongela (Nemato)

(o.13): Angelo Barkhuysen, Owethu Nqowana (Nemato), Bella Archibald, Sophie France, Keegan van Heerden Rachel Beukes,

(o.11): Keira van Heerden and Jason Archibald.
