THE annual PE Dance Festival, a feast of Ballet, Modern dance, Tap, Hip-Hop and Spanish dance, kicks off at the Savoy Theatre today.

Acclaimed choreographer, Sean Bovim, will be adjudicating the Modern, Tap, Hip Hop and Spanish Dance section of the Festival until August 20.

Thereafter, Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) examiner and festival adjudicator, Dianne Cheesman, takes the helm to adjudicate the Ballet and National Dance section of the Festival.

The Ballet section will run from August 22 to August 26.

With over 1 000 dancers from all age groups and dance genres competing in the festival, it is a much anticipated annual event for dancers, teachers and spectators alike, with each dancer striving for that coveted gold award.

The festival will include performances from tots aged five to teens aged 19 and up, from dance studios not only in Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage, but also George, Knysna, Cradock and Graaff Reinet.

This year’s festival also sees the introduction of a new Best Student Choreography Trophy in memory of the late Hermione Ballinger, co-founder of the festival.

This trophy will be awarded to the dance student who obtains the highest percentage from the adjudicator for an item choreographed by a senior dance student with no assistance from his/her dance teacher.

Local dance studios will showcase solo items, duets, trios, quartets and groups as well.

The festival culminates in the presentation of awards and trophies to Junior and Senior Dance Championship Winners in the Ballet, Contemporary, Hip Hop and Tap categories, as well as age group winners.

Daily sessions commence at 12 noon and 6pm. Tickets will be available at the door and at the Opera House Computicket outlet.
