Pet shelter struggles with festive season influx

2019-01-09 06:01

THE number of rescued cats and dogs at the Animal Welfare Society in Victoria Drive, Walmer, Port Elizabeth, has reached a daily intake-high of 10 stray animals during the festive season.

This has resulted in much higher and unforeseen costs to the organisation, which is under continuous financial strain.

According to the manager of the Animal Welfare Society, Hannes Stander, November, December and January are their busiest months.

“The Animal Welfare Society is an open shelter and we are extremely busy at this time of the year, as most stray animals are taken in by the shelter. We are a non-profit organisation and we do not form part of the SPCA. Last week we took in over 52 stray and surrendered pets,” Stander said.

Stander added that the cat and dog population keeps growing, especially over the festive season.

“We are doing the best we possibly can, but we need help.

“The organisation relies mostly on donations and receives no government funding.

“We love our animals, but we need help to maintain and nurture them,” Stander said.

The stray animals are in constant need of medical attention, as most of them have been on the streets for days.

Stander added, “The animals come in sick and malnourished. We need the help of the community to be able to continue caring for the animals.”

The shelter is appealing to all pet owners to take care of their animals during holidays.

“We urge all those who own pets and leave for holidays, to make the necessary arrangements for their animals.

“Our job is not to turn stray or unwanted animals away. A pet is for life and owners should know how to take care of them.”

The shelter is in dire need of any form of donations including dog- and cat food and any monetary donations.
