Plenty of netball action at Youth tourney

LOVERS Lane won the two junior divisions and Amathole captured the senior trophy when the Zakhele Netball Association (ZANA) held their annual June 16 Youth Tournament, at the Lillian Ngoyi Indoor Sports Complex in KwaZakhele, on Saturday and Sunday.

Participating teams came from Uitenhage, New Brighton, the northern areas, Motherwell, Zwide, Joe Slovo, Veeplaas and KwaZakhele.

The tournament, which started in a round-robin system, was organised for u/16, u/19 and senior teams. The teams were divided into pools. The two top teams in each pool booked themselves a place in the semi-finals, but in the u/19 category there were only two groups, so the pool winners went straight to the final.

Lovers Lane defeated Real Rovers 20-11 in the u/16 finals, while Dynamos finished third.

In the u/19 finals, Lovers Lane overcame Flying Eagles 20-17. The seniors’ final, which was played between Amathole and Real Rovers, produced some fireworks.

Amathole lifted the trophy after winning the game 17-15. The winning teams went home with trophies and gold medals and the runners-up received silver medals while the third place finishers settled for bronze medals.

Nelson Mandela Bay Netball Association development officer, Nobathembu Majiki, hailed the organisers of the tournament.

“The tournament organisers deserve an accolade. This was a tournament of high standard and I am very pleased. The teams and the fans were disciplined and the umpires were outstanding,” said Majiki.
