EACH year, The Animal Welfare Society (AWS) PE gives hundreds of homeless pets a second chance in finding a forever home. For many of those pets, AWS PE is the only home they’ve ever known.

The AWS Shelter Sleepover on April 13 offers the unique experience of being able to share an enclosure with the shelter pets for the evening. Rustic style camping in solidarity with homeless pets.

“The Shelter Sleepover is a fundraising initiative and sleepover participants -work colleagues or other- can team up and are requested to pledge to raise donations which can be sourced from anyone and everyone,” explained Samantha Terblanche of AWS Relations.

Companies/businesses may also adopt a spot at the shelter for the evening to erect their signage or banners and show their support of this event and initiative.

“With this event we hope to raise funds for our transportation expenses, along with sharing love and cuddles with our homeless pets as well as promoting adoptions,” Terblanche explained.

Having reliable transport is a vital operational component in keeping the shelter doors open and allowing the AWS to best serve animals in need.

Reliable transportation is required to attend to the many cases of cruelty and neglect reported to them, to carry out premises checks at adoptive homes, to transport stray animals collected from veterinary practices and members of the public, to facilitate a mobile clinic in the Walmer Township, to transport donated goods to the Wagtails Charity Shops, and to provide animal crematorium services to veterinary practices and the general public.

“In 2018 our operational vehicles travelled 2 590km per week with fuel costing an average of R15 876.82 per month.

“We are hoping that the funds raised can be used towards the purchase of a new or gently used vehicle, with which we can have a greater impact, save more lives and improve the welfare of animals in our community.”

The shelter will be open to the public from 16:00 to 20:00 on April 13 for guests to show their support to the sleepover participants, with live music entertainment provided by Etienne Verster from local PE band The Brothers and muso Jon Yawn Allen.
