ROADS across the metro will receive much-needed improvements after R463 million of the 2019/2020 capital budget has been set aside for this.

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Roads and Transport Directorate, led by Mayoral Committee Member, Rosie Daaminds, will focus mainly on the poorer areas in the metro for the general maintenance of roads.

These include repairing potholes, painting road markings, repairing traffic signs, maintaining traffic signals and maintaining stormwater drainage systems.

Daaminds said, during a media briefing last week, that Ward 41 had a total of 60 gravel roads, while Ward 42 had 56.

“If we can get more money for the tarring of gravel roads, it will assist us in beautifying our townships.

The metro’s total backlog of gravel roads is estimated at 778km.

According to Daaminds, the new coalition local government had made R17 million available for the Integrated Public Transport System (IPTS) in the metro over a nine-month period.

Daaminds added, “When we came into office, the revenue for the IPTS was less than R3 million.

“Our revenue has increased due to more commuters using the bus services of Phase 1A, which is only the first phase.

“We are looking forward to the completion of the other phases to make it more accessible for our people and much cheaper as well.”
