Rally car action at Baywest

2016-06-15 06:00

THERE will be entertainment of a different nature for shoppers at Baywest Mall this Saturday when rally cars will be racing at the rear entrance to the Mall.

Algoa Rally Club, the organisers of the 50k Challenge, supported by Baywest Mall, have a special stage that consists of gravel, tar and a jump which will test the best of driving and navigational skills.

Algoa Rally Club competitors will be challenging out of town visitors featuring a contingent of new Volkswagen Polos, Toyota Yaris, the ever faithful Volkswagen Golfs, with the crowd-pleasing rear wheel drive Nissans and Fords that could spoil the party of modern technology.

The programme starts at John Dory’s at 8am with documentation.

Spectators will have a grand stand view from the ice rink entrance of the mall parking area, to see the cars performing along the parallel gravel and tar roads.

Adjacent to the entrance parking area will be the service park where the service teams will service the vehicles between stages in full view of the spectators.

The rally head quarters will be at John Dory’s where a commentator in the area will keep the crowd informed on the progress of the rally with the first car entering the mall stage at 9:30am.

From the Baywest Stage, the rally will move to the GMP Motorsport Super Stage next to the PE Oval circuit along Mission Road.

This will be a popular vantage point for spectators with rally cars competing in pairs for stage time. This is expected to start at 10am.

The action will include the quarry loop then onto Jagtvlakte starting at the pan at 11:30am for the Uitenhage supporters.

The cars will return to Baywest Mall for a service then repeat the stages starting at the mall for the second round at 1pm.

Racing will take place regardless of the weather and there is no entrance fee payable.

As part of Father’s Day celebrations, one lucky father and child will win a spin in a rally car after the event around the stage.
